The Valley of the Sugar Mills is a true monumental compound which preserves a significant period of history of the productive forces and sugar production, whose cultural importance goes beyond the nation's boundaries.
During three centuries many sugar mills were built, not only changing the landscape, but also leaving about 73 architectural and archeological sites.
Trinidad is close to the Valley of Sugar Mills -also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site-. The Valley of Sugar Mills was the world´s largest cane sugar-producing center in the 17th century and the ruins of many of the 600 sugar mills that existed in the valley 200 years ago are still in the area.
As a result of the high concentration of black slaves in the site, a high tower was built in the center of the valley to watch over fires in plantations and possible slave uprisings. The Iznaga Tower and the old sugar mill premises, now fully restored, are favorite attractions for visitors.
